Intonation March 22, 2009

So today I had to do the intonation on my d string, after noticing it was out by about 10 cents. It’s quite easy for the Ibanez S470.

Follow the steps in the manual that came with the guitar, but also:

  • slacken the string you’re changing by a few turns on the tuning peg, before you change anything.
  • note that screwing the intonation bolt in lengthens the string, and screwing it out shortens. So, if the octave is too high, screw in; if it is flat, screw out.

It took me quite a while to realise the second point! I hope that someone else finds this helpful!
