Got a big beef pie for dinner today
Wioll probably keep half of it for tomorrow!
Things have been a bit hectic lately. Last week was spent working on my problem questions - we get assessed questions every week. We also had labs which are always assessed (I scored 100%!) Most evenings Im sat infront of a book.
Had a rehersal with the ew band last week. The retarded emo band that were us ing the room before us forgot they needed a key, so we started 30 minutes later. They sounded shit too.
Last night we suffered from a midnight raid by Goodricke block A, in which our common room was covered in bog roll. Vengeance mission is being planned….

Wow, what a busy week !
Its beginning to sink in just how much work Im going to be doing, with 20 hours timetabled and 17 hours independant study. Spent tuesday night going through the first chapter in my text book and some questions. I need to reach chapter 3 by next tuesday, so this weekend will be spent doing that.
Also, had my first astrophysics lectures today and yesterday. The lecturer seems like a nice woman, but shes not much good at teaching. The lessons stop and start and jump from one thing to another (death by powerpoint!). Will probably approach the board of representitives at some point to talk about it.
Tonight is bandsoc jam night. You turn up and jam with sttrangers for a bit! Should be good! Tomorrow night is hte first meeting of hte real ale society, looking forward to that. After that our parents (each house in james is allocated some second years to help the freshers get drunk) are having a house party at their flat in York, so well be heading over there about 11ish.
Good times ![]()

Joined a load of societies atfreshers fair yesterday, looks like im going to be quite busy!
I was going to join the UAS (university air squadron), but they were being bastards. Aparantly if you wear a black T shirt your not good enough. Fuck ‘em.
Heres what I joined and what they do / when:
BandSoc - The band society. Get to meet other people who want to be in a band, and they organise a battle of hte bands for the spring term. Meeting on thursday night for a jam session.
Real Ale soc - The Real Ale society. £4 to join and get to drink as much ale as I want at their events. They get 200 litres of Ale in, first come first serve.
Archery - self explanatory.
Ju Jitsu - Martial arts. Most of my house joined this. They teach self defense, eg what to do if someone comes at you with a broken bottle. Later one we can use katanas
Army - The army had a small stall. They teach you how to use rifles and work as a team. In the second year you can specilise and use actual artillery! Someone else in mty house is doing this too, it looks great!
So thats my week mostly used up! Let the good times commence ![]()
Linux and printers October 15, 2006

I have a HP PSC 1410 3 in 1 inkjet printer for uni. After opening it up and having a read of the instructions, it said that it came with drivers for windows and mac. This got me worried that my printer might not work (Is it really that hard to compile a linux driver ?).
Anyways, I followed the instruction on setting up and aligning it, then plugged it in. Then, usinghte add printer under System > Administration > Printer, found the HP PSC 1400 setting, applied, and it worked! From reading the user manual, this is alot less than M$ and mac users had to do!
Goes to show that linux is reaching the stage where its becoming easier and easier to use, more so than M$ and is becoming a viable alternative.

Ive made it to university !
And it rules !
I’m at york university taking physics with astrophysics BSc. Moved in on saturday, a day before the rest of my house. Spent saturday night chilling and wen to bed early. On the Sunday everyone else moved in. Everyone seems cool
Were in James A2, which has a reputation for hardcore partying
A2 is made up of a house consisting of three floors. Im on the top. Theres about 15 people spread out across those 3 floors, and we share a kitchen downstairs. The two fridges are full (mainly of booze.). We have a bath too ! But its too small to fit in :S A brewery maybe…
We started drinking at 4pm (LOL), and our parents met us. the parent system is second years that look out for us, so us how the system works, what we can get awway with, where to drink etc. They took us into York (35 minute walk) and to the local Wetherspoons. After that we headed off to a nightclub called Toffs. It was gay night :s. But it was still a good laugh. After some dodgy dancing I departed from the dance floor (Some half naked gay was shaking his thang in the vicinity). At around 3 we all left and walked home and I ended up at hte back talking to the girl in the room next to me. She seems pretty cool, and is taking maths, so Im not the only person who has to work !
Got my timetable and information pack today. I have 27 hours of lectures, labs and seminars a week. That doesnt include homework and reading. The guy doing electronics (A heavy metal drummer :D) has 32 ! Harsh lol.
Having a big party now (Invited the two houses next door over ~45 people inc. us), so there might be an update tomorrow….or tonight….’Blogging under the influlence’ as G puts it
Laters y’all.
MESH computers suck. October 6, 2006

NEVER buy a computer / laptop from mesh. Just dont. Heres why:
While searching for a laptop for university, I came across MESH. I soon found a good spec laptop, thats cheap and has a lot of additional hardware alot of other laptops dont have. There was me thinking Id hit the jackpot.
So I ring them up and place an order. They say it will take 10 working days to arrive, which is fine as that is what their website says. So I take a day off work on the day I expect it to arrive and wait. By about 3 in the afternoon I decide to ring them up and find out if its coming or not. Turns out, all orders had been delayed until next week. They were going to ring me, but forgot.
OK, So now Im a bit pissed off, I could have been working that day. They give me a new time (5 more working days.). So I take another day off work to wait in. And it happened again. They meant to ring me….but didnt. It was a tuesday. So I ring them up and ask when its meant to arrive, they say thursday. My dad rings them later that same day and they say friday. He also asks the sales assistant to ring him back with what mesh will offer us in compensation (by this time ive missed out on £100 + theyve breached their own t&c). That guy never rings. So we ring again, asking what we will receive for compensation, and they never ring back.
The next my dad rings them a third time and they finally get back, saying they will not offer anything in compensation. Bastards. So we cancelled the order.
What really got to me was that they never rang to say that it would be late. They never offered compensation after breaching their own contract.
Hence, never buy anything from mesh, or at least never buy anything if your working to a deadline (ie need it before you goto university or a business.).
